Gay Conversion Therapy

Page history last edited by Naug 11 years, 3 months ago

STONE HARBOR — Gov. Chris Christie said today he's undecided on whether the state should ban the controversial use of "gay conversion therapy," but the Republican governor still opposes same-sex marriage.

Christie said that he only knows little about the method. California enacted a law prohibiting the practice, but a federal court has blocked its implementation.

Do you think it is possible for an individual to attend therapy to change/alter sexual orientation?  Is sexual orientation a choice or is it something deeper?

From Wikipedia:

Conversion therapy (also known as reparative therapy by its proponents) is a range of pseudo-scientific treatments that aim to change sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual.

Oh and this is the government trying to control everyone again. Parents also should not have a choice on whether their children are homosexual or not, that is just wrong. It is that persons body and they should have the choice of what they want to do with it, not someone else because that's demoralizing, child abuse, and a violation of human rights.

I believe that the government is being to controlling. I have no idea how effective gay conversion therapy is, but it shouldn't be anyone's business what someone's sexual orientation is or what they do with it. Sexual orientation is more than i choice. being gay or straight isn't a decision that is made overnight and i think its pretty hard to change from one the other. sexual orientation is something instilled into a person and i doubt that it could be changed, even though i have no idea of how it works.

I don't believe that someone can go through this type of therapy to change their sexual orientation. I believe it is something that is determined at birth. You can't choose who your body is naturally attracted to, so these therapies shouldn't even be offered in the first place.

I do not believe that this therapy, or any therapy for that matter, has the capability to change someone's sexual orientation. While I do not believe that you are genetically born knowing your sexually, I also do not believe it it a choice. My beliefs are that, no
Matter what sexuality, there is a part of the brain that is stimulated by the opposite/same sex, giving one the attraction to another person. The truth of the matter is some people do not realize their true sexuality until later in life. Wheras some are able to understand it at a relatively young age. Furthermore, I believe that one's sexual orientation can come from how one is brought up as a child and the things they hear/see when one is very young.

If your not 100% sure of your sexual orientation I think it could be a good idea to attend. Asking questions, and getting answers could help. If you are homosexual or not, I really don't think it's your choice because you really can't help it, this is how you were born. You have a choice to hide your feelings but in the end your only hurting yourself. Attending a gay conversation therapy meeting could help some people, make them less confused and help them understand their own feelings. it's noone else's buisness if you go to one of these, so i dont see why the government is being so hard.

I don't think there's anything wrong with attending therapy, as long as an individual is not forced into it. I think your sexual orientation is a choice. It depends on whoever you're attracted to. I think it also has to do with the way you're raised and tour beliefs. If someone feels like they are attracted to someone of the same sex, and they don't want to, then I think therapy would help them. However, someone can't change if they're forced. I think that would just cause self esteem issues and mental health problems, which to me are more serious problems.

I also think the government is just making this a bigger problem than it is. I don't understand why it's even a problem to begin with. And I don't think science has anything to do with it, therefore all this scientist stuff in the therapy I don't think will work. If someone is just confused and wants to dig deeper into their problem, then simple therapy could help. But like I said, I think it's just a choice and nothing to do with science. So I think the government should just relax on this topic.

I believe that ones sexual orientation is highly influenced by their surroundings and upbringing anywhere from when they are young until they are in their early twenties. On the other hand, i believe that someones sexual orientation is somewhat predetermined and it is in their DNA. Therefore, i would say that the therapy sessions would not be too useful. The only situation where the therapy would work out well is if a person is not sure of their sexual orientation at all and the therapist could pose both sides of the coin and see which one feels better for the individual. This is a touchy subject but it can work in certain scenarios.

I believe that if someone is uncomfortable with their sexual orientation they could potentially have a life changing break through with the method of therapy. However I don't believe sexual orientation is a choice. I feel you are born with an attraction to either males or females. You can choose to accept your true sexual orientation or hide it, but deep down it's not something you yourself decide from the start. I think the governor is extremely ridiculous for supporting the method of therapy but then turning around and not really being one hundred percent on same sex marriage. That's absolutely nuts to me.

I don't think you can change a persons sexual orientation through therapy. I also don't think you should want to change it. That is a trait that you are born with and you shouldn't want to change it. I don't think sexual orientation is a choice. I do however feel if you are bi-sexual you may find a special male or female you really like and that could make you a homosexual or heterosexual.

Its deffinently possible for someone to attend this therapy but the really question is if it actually works. In the article they talk about parents sending their kids to this therapy most likely because the parents dont aprove of the kids choices which would also mean that the home environment is probably unstable and the kids dont want to be even in the same room as a therapist there parents are sending them to and probably wont listen to them at all. So yeah i think sexual orientation is a choice and is a decision made by the individual.

Governor Christie needs to get educated on the topic of anti-homosexuality therapy since he has a responsibility to the New Jersey population to make informed decisions. I believe a person is born with a certain orientation, and without outside influence will stay homosexual, heterosexual, or both for the rest of his or her life. However, I do think this therapy could definately succeed in changing a person's sexual orientation since psychology has proven that a person's behavior can change with operative conditioning or classical conditioning. This practice is similar to trans-gender surgery, and since this is legal so should the therapy. However, due to the high amount of kids being forced into this therapy by their homophobic and stereotypical parents, I belive a participant should be at least 18 years old or older. I do not think conversion therapy is morally right since it condones some parents' thinking that their homosexual children have an illness when in fact the parents are the ones closer to social ineptness.

I think it's possible to attend therapy for someones sexual orientation. You can attend therapy for anything you want. It's his or her choice to choose how they feel and choose to be and act. If parents are sending their kids to therapy, to me shows that they don't really approve of a child's sexual orientation or choice. I'm not saying therapy will definatley help the individual but I do think their sexual orientation is their choice.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the therapy because I feel that everyone has their own choice on what they want to do with their sexual orientation. As long as the procedure is safe and they know what they are getting themselves into, I see no problem. I think Chris Christie should research this more and make an educated decision. In the end I see no problem.

I don't think it is possible to change someone’s sexual orientation through some therapy. They may very well attend but I personally don't believe it will actually work. I don't think your sexuality is determined through your DNA. It shouldn't be anyone's business what someone's sexual orientation is or what they do with it. Your sexual orientation is a choice not something that just can be changed in a few sessions of therapy.

i dont believe taht someone can go through this type of therapy to change their sexual orientation. they can go through the process but what they want wont neccessarily be affected by some sort of therapy. its all up to the subject to decide.

i believe that its a good thing to go to therapy for your decisions. if you cant talk about it to any body because no body understands then you should go to therapy. but i dont think you can go to therapy to change your sexual orientation just by talking about it. but thats deffenetly how your born. you ont just decide one day that your gay.

wikiuser0333 said

I feel like your sexual orientation is almost like your handedness, you are either gay or straight or questioning or bisexual or whatever you want to identify as just like you are either right handed, left handed, or both. You can try to "change" or "fix" someone of both of those things and try to make them into whatever you want but there is nothing wrong, therefore nothing to change or fix. Just because someone doesn't fit into your mold of "normal" doesn't mean that they are wrong. People can try it, but deep down, there will always be a sexual preference that is not only more comfortable, but preferred. Therefore, they can never be "cured".

wikiuser0398 said

I dont think it is possible to change someone sexuality through therapy. I think that a person may come out of therapy and say that they have changed their orientation when in reality they have not. I dont have a problem with this therapy existing because if people really want to go to it i think they should be able to. While it may not be conventional and its results are not conclusive, I think that if a person truely desires to go to it, or their family wants them to, they should have the option to do so. I think that there is nothing wrong with homosexuality and people have the right to be whatever orientation they would like. So while I dont agreee with the therapy, I think people should have the freedom to participate in it.

We talk about conversion 'therapies' in psychology. Basically any type of therapy utilizes the concepts of classical and operant conditioning. Classical conditioning seeks to pair up natural responses with conditioned stimuli--this is the process by which dogs can be taught to salivate on command with a whistle, for example. Operant conditioning uses reward and punishement to alter behavior. In either case, a true behavioral change is difficult to attain. Conditioned responses, in this case, heterosexual attitudes are subject to something called extinction. This is the process through which the conditioned responses wear off, and the innate attitudes prevail. In this particular instance, an originally homosexual person, has high potential to revert back to homosexual tendencies, despite conditioning to the contrary. Most psychologists agree that this type of therapy is ineffective and not ethical. Sexual orientation is a product of nature--it's given and programmed. There are nurtured influences that contributed to sexual orientation, but it is widely accepted that these influences do not overpower the natural influences. As a result, this therapy is not appropriate, and should not be practiced. In any case, homosexuality is not a disease or crime--there's no justification to alter those who choose that lifestyle.

I believe it is completely inhumane to force homosexual individuals to attend this therapy. I also believe it doesn't work. Many of the people in the article stated the treatment was psychologically damaging and some of the methods seemed downright cruel. These individuals that went to the therapy seem to still be homosexual, proving it did not work. I can though see the logic in going for these treatments. Some people are unhappy being gay and will do anything to be straight. It makes me sad in a way. Also, I believe homosexuality is something you are born with. There are many homosexual men with masculine fathers that are still gay. This disproves the nurture argument. People should be comfortable with who they are.

wikiuser0331 said

I think that some homosexuals would be open to this subject. Even though I personally dont agree with the therapy, I feel like others would be open to the therapy. Some homosexuals accept their sexual orientation, while others are still in denial and want to change that about them. I think that even though some homosexuals want to change that about themselves, therapy won't change anything about it. Maybe therapy could influence them to chnage their mind, but I dont think that therapy could change their sexual orientation. Some people think that being a homosexual is a choice, but I think that is goes deeper than being just a choice. But this therapy, in my opinion, wouldnt change anything at all.

I feel as though it is possible for someone to go to therapy to alter their orientation but it would definitely be difficult and take time to do. That being said, I do not believe that there should be such a thing as therapy for changing orientation. it is demoralizing to try to change a person. It is in complete violation of an individuals rights. If somebody is happy with the life they have chosen, than it is shameful for us to try to take their happiness away. I also believe that being gay is not a choice. Although some people may show at some point that they are straight but then become gay. I firmly believe that you are born into being straight or gay, it just varies from person to person on how long it takes for them to realize it.

The idea of gay conversion therapy sounds like a topic of the twentieth century. Our generation is the age of toleration, we shouldn't be trying to convert people to what seems to be normal. Personally, I believe that one's sexual orientation is contributed to a variety of biological factors. It isn't a choice, we can not choose what we are attracted to. This therapy sounds very radical, I may not agree with it, but if an individual who is uncomfortable with their sexuality believes they can be changed by this then by all means go for it. I can't stress how inefficient such a practice can be because they're trying to change the unchangeable. However, if someone wants to go through this therapeutic treatment then by all means go for it. I say live and let live, don't burden anyone else's life because you are uncomfortable with it. After all, we deny and destroy things we can not accept or change. Fortunately, our race seems to be moving towards a very tolerant lifestyle in which race, religion, sexual orientation, etc aren't weights that hold one down but badges to wear with pride.

I don't think "gay conversion" is actually possible. It's sort of like saying you can straight people gay using a "straight conversion." Aside from that the conversion therapy, from what I have read, seems to be rather inhumane. I don't think that sexual orientation is a choice, people don't just wake up and say "hey, I'm going to be attracted to so-and-so today." I think that the governor should have at least looked into what the therapy actually is before making any kind of statement, even if his opinion is undecided.

I think that some homosexuals would be open to this. because this would be a step forward for gays to be able to have a weeding some day. the only reason republicans oppose gay marriage is because it is not a traditional wedding between a man and a woman.

I believe it is impossible to alter ones sexual preferences from therapy. It should be banned in new jersey because I am questioning whether or not the method is safe or even humaine to do. If this was actually a method, couldn't they do the opposite and turn straight people gay. It doesn't make sense to me that this is even a possibility. Sexual preference is not mentally decided it is something deeper.

i dont really think that this "gay conversation" is really possible. i dont think you can alter ones sexuality generally and especially not at a later age. i do not know how people become homosexual. they could be born, it could be the way they were raised; it could be both, i do not know but i dont think discussing about with a therapist or other heterosexual people is going to change it.

I believe that it is impossible to change one's sexual orientation because I think we are born with our sexuality. But I do believe that it is possible to cognitively change someone's thoughts so that they do believe they are straight, siimilar to hypnotism. Although someone will never be able to truely change their genetic makeup because sexual orientation is definitely not a choice.

wikiuser0397 said

I believe that sexual orientation isn't something you are necessarily born with but more of a choice, however im not saying that you wake up and say "I think I am going to be gay today!" Its more of something you grow into based off learning experiences, kind of like trial and error. however i do believe that if a man is born a man and with the male genitalia but adamantly believes he is a woman trapped in a man's body then i do believe that therapy can help him find himself mentally and help him better understand what he believes and feels.

Wow. I feel like I’m so frustrated after reading these wikis -_-
The ignorance oozes from the statement ‘sexual orientation is a choice.’
Of course, as a person grows and develops they learn more about themselves… one being sexual orientation. No one can control who they are and people still believe they can condition others to love in a manor they see suitable. The fact that anyone came up with the idea to use therapy to change an individual’s sexual orientation is outrageous.

I think that this is so wrong. I dont think that someone should have to change who they are to fit in with everyone else. What they do to these people is horrible. I think that any one that had took part in this should be charged with some type of crime. I dont think that anyone shoulkd be forced to go through this. I think that everyone should just be allowed to be themselves and not at the go through hell to make they like everyone else.

It doesnt matter what sex people are into. Everybody should leave eachother alone about this topic. If someboy would rather be gay, let them. If a gay wants to be straight, let them. Who gives a rats ass what eachothers sexuality is. This is a free country, let people be free to choose.

It makes me so angry how Chris Christy is even considering this. It should be an outright "NO" if it were up to me. People who are gay don't just CHOOSE to be gay one day. Do you think they WANT to be bullied, and tortured at school? What about throwing up or getting nauseous everytime they see a gay couple together? No. No one does. I sure wouldn't. If the roles were reversed and heterosexuals were scrutenized for being straight most of the population would be hiding their sexual orientation...

The Republican Party is notoriously known for anti-homosexuality, but all in all it falls under "freedom of choice". Apparently, Chris Christy is homophobic about this issue. But me, as an individual am in favor and support gay marriage and gay rights.
