Teen pregnancy rates reach 'dramatic' 40-year low in U.S.

WASHINGTON –  Teen pregnancy rates in the U.S. have dropped to a 40-year low, according to a study released Wednesday.

The Guttmacher Institute, a non-profit sexual health research group that favors abortion rights, found the rate of pregnancies among 15- to 19-year-olds has declined 42 percent from its peak 22 years ago.

In 1990, the pregnancy rate was 117 per 1,000 female teens -- in 2008, that figure had dropped to 68 per 1,000.

The research also showed that the number of teenagers giving birth dropped 35 percent between 1991 and 2008, from 61.8 to 40.2 births per 1,000 teens.

"Make no mistake, the credit for this remarkable progress goes to teens themselves who have, over the past two decades, adopted a less sex, more contraception strategy -- one that is clearly working."

- Sarah Brown, CEO of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy

The decline in teenage pregnancies resulted in fewer abortions, with 17.8 abortions per 1,000 teenage girls and women in 2008 -- a 59 percent drop from its 1988 peak of 43.5 abortions per 1,000 teens.

"The declines in teen pregnancy have been nothing short of extraordinary," Sarah Brown, CEO of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy said. "Make no mistake, the credit for this remarkable progress goes to teens themselves who have, over the past two decades, adopted a less sex, more contraception strategy -- one that is clearly working."

The institute said that while teen pregnancy, birth and abortion rates had declined "dramatically" among all racial and ethnic groups since 1990, pregnancy rates among black and Hispanic teens remained two to three times as high as that of non-Hispanic white teens.

In addition, the abortion rate for black teens was found to be four times that of whites.

Kathryn Kost, lead author of the study said, "The continued inequities among racial and ethnic minorities are cause for concern. It is time to redouble our efforts to ensure that all teens have access to the information and contraceptive services they need to prevent unwanted pregnancies."

DOES THIS SURPRISE YOU? WHY DO YOU THINK THAT THE NUMBERS HAVE DROPPED? WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO TO MAKE SURE THE NUMBER CONTINUES TO DROP?

This does surprise me. I feel that teens are having more and more sex every year and younger and younger. The numbers have dropped because many teens are using a little bit of common sense and using condoms an birth control. To make sure the number continues to drop we should continue having sex-ed classes.

this does surprise me a lot. teens now a days are having sex like its nothing. i think the numbers have dropped because teens have realized the things that can happen if they are not protected. other things we can do is to keep teens educated and keep providing them with options of safe sex.

This doesn't surprise me at all actually. College is needed in order to have a well paying job and having a baby can really ruin future plans such as college. Teens don't want to risk their chance at going to college. Also, education on HIV/AIDS and other std's has probably rightfully scared a lot of teens into using protection, all the while protecting from pregnancy as well. Overall, I'm not surprised because more education = more people using contraception and there has definitely been an improvement in education. If we keep educating teens, the teen pregnancy rate will continue to drop.

It is a bit surprising but i suppose i understand. Women are starting to become more independent and are trying harder to do things for themselves to become mmore successful. Many times this means putting off families and relationships for a time when they are where they want to be in life. To help the numbers drop continuously, teens should be better educated

i agree with wikiuser0214 on that everyone should use protection unless they are ready for pregancy and are suitable to support a child.and i think that it is surprising that the numbers are droping especially with shows like teen mom idiolizing pragnancy

No, this doesn't surprise me because areas in poverty have a high population of minorities and they might not be informed about contraceptions or might not have the money to pay for them because they are so poor. I think that the numbers have dropped because the organizations to prevent teen pregnancy are making birth control and condoms more available and i think that these women are realizing how hard it is to have a baby when you are still a child yourself due to shows like 16 and pregnant, not one girl thinks that its the best thing in the world and they have to give up their whole life because of a mistake that could have been easily prevented. There's nothing else we can do besides make contraceptions available to everyone and keep everyone informed and not glorify teen pregnancy.

Its not really a suprise kids start having sex at the age of 14 or 15. To me I dont really think the numbers have dropped that much. But people should be more careful because birth control and condoms don't alwayprotect you. Start teaching kids about sex in school around 8th grade and tell them to use condoms and be safe.

This does surprise me. I would have thought that teenagers now a days are worse then they have ever been. They have more resources and a lot of times their parents dont know what they are doing. I think the number dropped because teenagers now have better forms of protection. They most likely have easier access to birth control. To make sure the numbers keep dropping, we can continue to teach sex ed in school and teach kids the consequences of their actions. Parents can also do a better job of knowing what is going on in their kids lives and making sure their kids stay safe.

It is kind of surprising but with all of the awareness we have now, it makes women more smart about knowing if they truely want and are ready for a child. It is a big step and will make drastic chanes on her life that she may not be ready for. In order to keep the numbers down we should continue to pursue awareness for all women.

i tihnk that the drop is due to better birth control products, education, and the way the individual is brought up. to keeps the numbers dropping, we can continue to improve our birth control products and continue educating our kids right. this does surprise me because as I grow up in a high school enviornment, i see that each grade behind mine is getting worse and worse, so personally, i do not expect that these numbers will remain at a decreasing rate

this doesnt surprise mee! now a days teens are getting younger, and younger being sexually active and now since there is so many ways to protect your self all the time. wearing condoms and birth control are the two most common ways for safe sex. To make sure the numbers keep dropping, we can still keep up the advertisements and shows about teen pregnancy and how you can protect your self in situations like that

It does and doesn't surprise me at the same time. It surprises me because there has been so much more information in the media about how teens are getting pregnant, and they even have two of their own shows, "Sixteen and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom". Therefore, as more attention is brought to it it makes it seem as if the numbers are increasing instead of decreasing. But on the other hand it doesn't surprise me because there is so much more education and awareness about pregnancy, and how it truly can happen to anyone. I think the numbers have dropped because there is much more awareness about teen pregnancy and teens are able to hear true stories about how tough it is being a teen mom, and i guess you could say that it would teach them to have safe sex and be careful.

It doesnt surprise me. Due to the fact we have better education to tell us how to prevent it. more technques on how to not get pregnant.we can keep continueing to educate and learn from mistakes.

i am not surprised that the age of kids having sex has dropped. kids are being exposed to sexual situations though alot of ways. whether its on tv or on the computer there are a lot of ways they can be exposed to it. people will start to se how bad it is going and hopefully will take a step and start to talk to there children about sex so if thy do have it it can be safe.

It surprises me in the fact that, yes, kids are having sex younger and younger so how is the teen pregnancy rate so low? But then again, educators are teaching us more and more about it each year, and the forms of protection to use. Back then not many people used condoms, but in todays age they are more popular. To keep the numbers so low we can continue to do what were doing with advertising birth control and coming out with new forms of protection.

These rates do surprise me! I guess that show 16 and pregnant prevented a lot of teens to have babies. But society is more aware of what its like to have a child. Back then, everyone was conservative and didn't think it was "appropriate" to talk about sex. Now that we are more educated, we can still have sex and be safe about it. To continue dropping these rates, i'd say we keep building on the education system for safety and condom commercials should be put on more frequently to brainwash people!

This fact that teen pregnancy rates have dropped does not surprise me. In years past when teen pregnancy rates were first computed, it was typical for teenagers to get married younger and start having children earlier. I think that this can be a contributing factor as to why rates were higher. I also think that there is a lot more awareness of the hardships that come along with being a teen mom, thanks to shows like 16 and Pregnant. To continue to encourage rates to drop, I think that we should learn more about birth control and contraceptives at a younger age, maybe like 15.

Im not surprised. Teen Pregnancy has become a big topic for the media. With shows like 16 and pregnant, the importance of birth control is showed. Another cause could be the development of sex education classes. we can keep the number shrinking by keeping it a media and news spotlight, and continue sex ed classes.

This does not surprise me because kids get interested about sex at a really young age that they learn something about protection too. To make sure the number continues to drop we should still learn more on about protection.
